Another way we help to create a pleasant dental experience is with sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry is when you take a mild sedative beforehand, so you will be completely relaxed and anxiety-free during the procedure.

You take the sedative (for example Valium) about an hour before you go to the dentist's office. During the procedure, you will be conscious, but extremely relaxed. Afterward, you'll need someone to drive you home, since you may be drowsy.

Another method Dr. Strader may use on you is "laughing gas." This is a gas (nitrous oxide) you breathe in through a mask. The effects are very similar to Valium - you will be conscious during the procedure, but extremely relaxed. Nitrous oxide, however, does not last as long as valium, so, in most cases, you'll be okay to drive yourself home.

Of course, at the root of all dental fears is the fear of the unknown. Aside from providing sedation dentistry, we will also explain every step of every procedure. When you have a clear understanding of what we're doing, you'll find your apprehension level dropping.
